Your Guide to Finding The Best Gaming Laptop Under $1000

By Yassine TN

Finding a gaming laptop is quite easy, just buy the latest and you’ll get the high-end performance that everyone is looking for, but that’s not the case if you are on a budget! Looking for an affordable gaming laptop that is capable to drive a smooth performance of the latest games is a bit challenging. That being said, and after sourcing the market we came up with a list of the best gaming laptop under $1000 that will give you the best performance yet, for the lowest possible price.

Things to consider before buying a gaming laptop

Graphics card(GPU)

The graphic card is responsible for graphics processing, they’re also helpful of taking the strain off the main processor and RAM as they contain their own memory, It’s important to consider that video games are based on graphics and high processing of images, for that, I believe that the GTX 1050 and the GTX1060 are good options for the budgets, also the RX 560 and the RX 570 from AMD are also good options and even much cheaper.

Processor(CPU)

A processor or CPU is responsible for running programs and Software on the system, the faster the processor is the faster and smoother the programs will be processed, for gaming, you need a good and fast processor, i5 and i7 6th,7th, 8th gen inter-core processors are good options, AMD processors are good as well, especially the Ryzen models, they are powerful and even cheaper than intel CPUs.

RAM

The RAM (random access memory) is responsible for handling already processed software and apps, the bigger ram you have the more apps that your device can handle smoothly, 8GB RAM is good to keep things up and running perfectly, however, if you can afford 16GB that will be better and in any way, you have the option to extend the memory as most computers come with extra slots.

Display

Without a good display, you won’t see the beauty of gaming and how good the stuff your laptop hides, some can generate 4k quality but you need a 4k display to see that. For the sake of budget, we will stick to a FULL HD 1080p Display, it will give you the best experience especially if you have a small screen (Compared to a PC).

Storage

Most of the new laptops support SSD. SDD is so much better and faster than HDD in transferring data. they will help run the games smoothly and reduce lag, but they come with a higher cost, 128-256GB SDD is good for a start.

Things to not think a lot about

There are things that you shouldn’t take into consideration when buying an affordable gaming laptop such as the battery life, keyboard, touchpad, and heating. Laptops are known for their low battery life and by the time the battery will lose its lifetime easily(Makes sure to take off the battery while using the laptop that will extend the lifetime of your battery.)

when it comes to the keyboard, most laptops come with great and responsive keyboards, but if you want an external one you can check our cheapest gaming keyboard list. For the mouse, It’s recommended that you get a cheap gaming mouse.

1.  Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop

  • Processor: i7-8750H
  • Graphics: GTX 1060 6GB
  • RAM: 16GB DDR5
  • Storage: 256GB SSD

Overview

Our first laptop to review and the less affordable one on the list is the Acer Predator Helios 300, the laptop is backed up with an 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H 6-Core Processor (Up to 4.1GHz), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Overclockable Graphics, 16GB of RAM (2666Mhz) and 256GB SSD (Solid State Drive). with an extra slot to increase the storage. The hardware actually is more than what you need to run all of the latest games of 2019 and the upcoming ones in 2020 at high performance.

The sound quality is normal and not that good quality, The keyboard has a red backlight which you can’t change and comes with side num pads(which I like).

Selling point

One more thing I like about this laptop which is the biggest selling point in such a price range is the screen, this laptop has a 144hz IPS FULL HD, 1080p display. 144hz is the highest you can get as refresh rate: the number of times a display refreshes to show a new image. 144Hz means the display refreshes 144 times per second to show a new image which is very fast compared to other screens that come with 60hz or nicer ones that get 120hz. IPS displays are good for color production and viewing angles, and the resolution of 1080 is more than perfect for a 15-inch display.

Overheating

I can’t say that overheating is a big deal for laptops, as all laptop gets overheated while in gaming mode or rendering, it’s acceptable and the laptop is made to stand the heat. however, there are ways to make it cooler like activating the cooler boost option in the Predator Sense software or making the fans run faster…

Thoughts

Acer’s 2019 Predator Helios 300 delivers excellent value for the price tag. if you want a highly refresh rate screen with 144hz, then this is your best budget option, the only downside is the storage, with 256GB you may need to upgrade sooner or later. As a gaming laptop under $1000, it’s definitely worth it

Pros & Cons

  • 144hz high-speed display
  • High performance
  • Lightweight
  • Overclockable GPU

  • Overheating*
  • No display port

2.  MSI GL63 8SC-059

  • Processor: i7-8750H
  • Graphics:  GTX 1650 4GB
  • RAM: 8GB DDR5
  • Storage: 256GB SSD

Overview

There is no doubt that MSI is leading when it comes to gaming, though, from their range we picked up the GL63 8SC-059, it’s one of their cheapest laptops, and gives a stable performance, it’s hiding an i7-8750H 2.2 – 4.1GHz processor from intel, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650 4G GDDR5, 8GB (8G*1) DDR4 2666MHz upgradable to 32GB and a 256GB NVMe SSD and a 15.6″ FHD NTSC Wide View Display.

The sound quality is good thanks to 5x giant speakers, the keyboard from SteelSeries is responsive and the keys are big enough for easy use.

Selling point

The biggest selling point of this laptop is the cooling system, the device comes with a cooler boost 5 system that provides thermal solutions for both the Processor and Graphics card with a total of 7 heat pipes to ensure the best performance under intense gaming but that will add extra few pounds to the weight, but who cares as long as it does the job?

Thoughts

The MSI GL63 8SC-059 packs some decent features, a sturdy design, and a quiet cooling system, but for the value, I believe it’s a bit expensive. In fact, we’ve listed other alternative that comes with better hardware and gaming experience.

Pros & Cons

  • Cooler Boost 5
  • Responsive keyboard
  • Good sound quality
  • Extendable RAM

  • heavyweight

3.  Dell G5 15 gaming laptop

  • Processor: i5-8300H
  • Graphics: GTX 1050 Ti 4GB
  • RAM: 8GB DDR5
  • Storage: 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD

This Dell G5 is one of the cheapest gaming laptops but with powerful hardware that supports almost every game, it comes with an 8th gen intel core i5 8300H up to 4.0Ghz, Geforce 4GB GTX 1050TI, 1280GB + 1TB HDD, and a 15.6″ Full HD display.

A very worthy entry-level gaming laptop with all the features you might need, and great performance for its affordable price. the design is simple and straight to the point, it looks professional and nice. Overall the Dell G5 is a very solid laptop that I recommend for those who don’t like the fancy gaming look  design of other gaming laptops

Selling point

The biggest selling point is the storage, the Dell G5 comes with an extra 1TB HDD of disk space along with 128GB SDD. and that’s cool actually, storage is an important feature to store all your big data without being afraid of deleting them every time to install new stuff. You can keep the 128GB SDD for the system and online games and use the HDD to store everything else.

Thoughts

The Dell G5 15 is a great gaming laptop for less than $1000 due to its outstanding CPU performance, excellent battery life, and massive storage. The gaming experience is below the average due to its medium-range GPU. Overall, it’s one of the best budget gaming laptops in its range.

Pros & Cons

  • Simple and professional design

The laptop also comes with other great features like Enhanced audio detail by 30% with a built-in Audio Power Amplifier and golden audio jack, and dragon center software to optimize your gaming experience.

Selling point

This device is not only quiet and less noisy but also thin and very lightweight compared to other gaming laptops. At only 4.10lbs and 0.85in thin, the device is considered one of the best when it comes to size.

Thoughts

The MSI GF63 is less expensive than the GL63 [almost $100 less] it comes with a slower CPU and GPU but with higher SSD storage [+256GB] so if you are on a tighter budget and like the MSI, you may want to consider this one.

Pros & Cons

  • Leight and thin
  • Well built.
  • Great display

  • The bottom ridge under the mouse pad is very uncomfortable
  • Cheap NVMe drive.

5.  Lenovo Ideapad L340 Gaming Laptop

  • Processor: i5-9300H
  • Graphics: GTX 1650
  • RAM: 8GB DDR5
  • Storage: 512GB SDD

For a lower price than other brands, Lenovo will give you pretty much the same or even better performance as it has the same hardware as other more expensive alternatives. In fact, it’s better and cheaper than the Dell G5 for example, with better graphics, processor, and more SSD storage. The laptop has a backlight keyboard with 3 settings (low, high, and Off) when it comes to the heat, the laptop is not that loud compared to others, but it does get warm Though, the audio system is backed up with Dolby Audio technology that drives smooth sound quality and clear audio-details.

Selling point

There are two selling points that you may not find in other laptops. The first one is that this device gets a 180-degree angle, that’s 100% flat, I don’t know if this has anything to do with gaming, but some people may like this feature, and the second one is a cool feature that allows you to hide the camera any time With a physical shutter on the webcam.

Thoughts

Overall this Lenovo IdeaPad is a mid-range gaming laptop with the ability to perform heavy work. It’s packaged in a sturdy, clean chassis. It presents a very good value for the money

Pros & Cons

  • High-quality sound system
  • Smooth gameplay and high performance
  • The mouse pad is very responsive and sturdy

  • There is only one slot for RAM
  • Can’t add an additional hard drive

6.  Gaming HP Pavilion

  • Processor: Ryzen 5 3550H
  • Graphics: GTX 1050 3GB
  • RAM: 8GB DDR5
  • Storage: 256GB SDD

Overview

Our cheapest gaming laptop on the list is the HP Pavilion, it comes with an AMD 2nd Gen Quad-Core Ryzen 5 3550H processor, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 3GB GDDR5m 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, and a 15,6″ FHD IPS Display.

This laptop has the lowest performance so far, but it’s good enough to run everything as expected, in mid to high settings.

If you are on a tight budget and you are that type who doesn’t focus on gaming details and if you want a laptop that does the job and run games without issues and gives you an acceptable performance then you can go for this one.

Selling point

  • Does The job
  • Low price [less than $600].

Thoughts

It’s not the best gaming laptop under $1000, but If you are looking for an entry-level laptop with a Full-HD Display, that delivers an above-the-average experience and is able to run most of the new games, especially those battle royal ones smoothly then this laptop is a great deal.

Pros & Cons

  • Simple and nice look
  • Acceptable performance for the price

  • Not good for high settings gaming
